Lean-thinking is the combination of applying known software development principles with lean-management and lean-learning work in order to speed time-to-market while improving quality and lowering costs. It provides insights from project initiation through development, deployment and consumption by the customer (internal in IT and external in product companies). Lean focuses on helping people improve the environment and systems in which they work.

While first generation agile methods have a solid track record at the team level, many agile transformations get stuck trying to expand throughout the organization. With a set of principles that can help improve software development quality and productivity, Lean Thinking provides a method for escaping the trap of local optimization.
