Duration: 1 Hour 30 Min Credits: 1 PDU Category A – Free PDU
By: Computer Aid Inc IT Metrics & Productivity Institute (Rep 2733)

The summer of 1940 saw the German blitzkrieg or lightning war, conquer France in six weeks and usher in a new era of mechanized warfare.

The United States Army was woefully unprepared for this new type of conflict due to demobilization after World War I and budget shortfalls caused by the Great Depression.

Faced with the need to quickly develop a vehicle to replace the mule to transport troops and small payloads the Army develops a set of impossible requirements and sends it to 135 businesses to compete to build a prototype in just forty-nine days.

This session tells the story of the only company who dared to meet the challenge, an insignificant bankrupt firm in a small town in western, Pennsylvania.

A tale of daring and perseverance, their story holds timeless lessons for today’s project managers in how to get projects done as well as for those trying to meet the challenges of the rapidly changing and challenging environment of the 21st century.

Presenter:  Mark Kozak-Holland (LinkedIn profile) has written several “Historical Lessons in Project Management” type books including:

These books are also available on the Lessons From History website – Titanic Lessons for IT Projects (the first and second chapters are available for download), 160 pages and Avoiding Project Disaster: Titanic Lessons for IT Executives (Lessons from History), 312 pages.
