Project managers tend to seek consensus amongst stakeholders for a variety of reasons: to reduce conflict, because of the pressure to achieve strict deadlines, lack of authority arising from a matrix organization or to be perceived as someone who takes into account the needs of a diverse range of professionals that need to collaborate to achieve the objectives of the projects.

However, there are circumstances in which consensus can hide the correct option, create high risks and lead to the failure of the projects.

From the Panama Canal to the Cuban missile crisis, that nearly started the third world war, learn from the great world leaders how to provoke diversity of opinion amongst stakeholders to achieve the best possible solution for the success of the projects.

Presenter:  Solange Aguilera, PMP, ITIL, DMS, MSc (LinkedIn profile) is a senior project manager and coach with extensive experience managing globalized IT/Telecom projects involving countries in South America, Europe, Asia and North America.  She is a frequent speaker at PMI events in Brazil and explores how neuroscience can help us understand and develop project manager’s capabilities.
