Due to the positive response to MPUG’s previous session regarding the use of macros in Microsoft Project, Ira Brown, a recognized Microsoft Project expert, will build on his last demonstration to show you even more exciting ways that macros can be used to automate this application.

The session, which is geared toward the Microsoft Project business user rather than a technical programmer, will provide practical, real-world illustrations for solving the common challenges a user faces when working with Microsoft Project.

Topics include:

  • Recording and editing basic macros
  • Assigning a macro to a button in the ribbon
  • Creating a “zoom in/zoom out” macro to adjust text size in your project
  • Creating automation to count the number of displayed tasks after a filter has been applied
  • Creating automation to increase or decrease the work for a task by a specific percentage
  • Creating a project status report in Microsoft Word
  • Distributing your macros and custom ribbon to others

Attendees will receive a copy of the presentation materials and all of the sample macros created during this webinar!

Microsoft Project can be turned into an estimating tool with continuously improving data. You can copy these features from a schedule template found here, for instance.

Making schedules for specific projects from a template provides consistent schedule structure and vocabulary, accumulating lessons learned, and estimating data.

The features enable two techniques:

  1. Analogous estimating, which is scaling parts of a schedule or an entire project estimate, &
  2. Parametric estimating, which is scaling the number of items a detail tasks produces.

The download template also illustrates:

  1. How to include a risk reserve and estimating uncertainty buffer &
  2. How to produce an Excel report with tabs for tasks recently completed, underway, and coming soon (Kanban).

Presenter: Oliver Gildersleeve, PMP, MCTS , (LinkedIn profile) PMP, MCTS, is lead planner on a Veterans Affairs 5 year major initiative. He co-founded an MPUG chapter and was president for 4 years. He teaches advanced scheduling for PMI chapters: San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and Monterey. He also teaches for San Francisco State and for UC Santa Cruz extensions.

Instead of trying to decide whether you should be using Microsoft Project or SharePoint for Project Management…

Why Not Use Both!

By leveraging the Microsoft Project Sync in SharePoint, you can get the best of both worlds.

Microsoft Project can be overwhelming and difficult for inexperienced project managers to update their work. This can lead to problems in user adoption and wasted resources on expensive, unused licenses.

SharePoint seamlessly syncs with Microsoft Project, extending the project management capabilities of both applications.

In this webinar you will learn how to:

  • Integrate Microsoft Project with SharePoint Templates.
  • Manage projects with multiple team members through a single Microsoft Project license.
  • Get summary reports of all projects with executive dashboards and individual reports.

Presenter: Alan Morgan (LinkedIn profile)  is a project management consultant with BrightWork. Alan is a senior IT professional and an accomplished business manager with an outstanding track record in project management, consultancy and IT software solutions.

Microsoft Project is a scheduling tool, and the schedule of every project is based on one or more calendars. In this high-energy webinar, Dale Howard will discuss the following:

  1. Configuring the Standard calendar in your Microsoft Project schedule

  5. Specifying PTO on Resource calendars
  6. Using a Task calendar to override the project schedule
  7. Understanding how calendars impact the Duration, Start, and Finish of every task

Although the final topic seems to be very simple and straight forward, Dale guarantees that this topic will surprise you.

In fact, regarding the final topic, Dale says, “Always trust the schedule in Microsoft Project. And when the schedule of a task does not seem to make sense, the underlying cause is almost always a calendar.”
