The Hwaeseong Fortress in Suwon, Korea was built between 1794 and 1796. The wall and fortifications include 48 separate facilities. At the completion of the project, a ten-volume report documented every detail from blueprints to engineering methods, materials, resources and schedule.

In this video, Young Min Park tells how this project was initiated and illustrates how the planning and management processes of this historic project map to the PM processes of today.

In contrast, the Great Wall of China also started as separate fortifications, as early as the 7th century BC. During the Qin Dynasty of 220-206 BC, the scope was changed to a single unified fortress to protect the Chinese Empire. This was an early example of the project manager’s nightmare – ‘Scope Creep’.
