Project portfolio management (PPM), when tailored to context, improves the effectiveness of senior management decision making on selecting, prioritizing, funding, monitoring, and adjusting projects.

Such portfolio-level approaches can improve alignment with an organization’s strategy and enhance return-on-investment (ROI).

Although the construction sector is strongly project-based and represents a major segment of the global economy (13% of GDP $ 10 trillion in 2018 projected to $14 Trillion by 2025), little is known about whether and how Project Portfolio Management (PPM) can provide benefits in this important sector. The research team from Australia and the United Kingdom investigated approaches to strategic alignment and PPM through inquiring into project-based practices of organizations in the construction sector.

Shankar Sankaran (LinkedIn profile),  Catherine Killen (LinkedIn profile),  Jeff Scales (LinkedIn profile),  Hedley Smyth (LinkedIn profile), & Stewart Clegg (LinkedIn profile) discuss PPM approaches that are used in the case firms investigated, despite the fact that the terms ‘portfolio’ and ‘portfolio management’ were not always used.

Findings also show PPM approaches being tailored to suit the construction context.

We’ve all heard the adage: “People don’t leave jobs; they leave managers.”

While many leaders struggle to retain or replace employees, this is not true of all leaders. In fact, high-performing managers are four times more likely to retain employees than low-performing managers.

The key is discovering what organizations can do to create high-performing leaders—especially as employees continue their exodus in the “Great Resignation.”

For the sixth year, Training magazine and Wilson Learning Worldwide teamed up to conduct the Annual Leadership Survey, which focuses on what organizations are doing to develop effective leaders in these constantly changing times.

The results provide organizations with a clear roadmap to achieve a greater return on their leadership development investments as they strengthen their culture and bolster employee engagement.

Join Lorri Freifeld, (LinkedIn profile) Editor-in-Chief of Training magazine’, and Dr. Michael Leimbach, (LinkedIn profile) VP of Global Research and Development, for this webinar.

Explore:

  • The current state of leadership development (including levels of investment, priority skills, and learning methods)
  • The pandemic’s impact on leadership development efforts
  • Best practices and tips from high-performing companies to increase the effectiveness of leadership development efforts
